As I first reported June 5, fencing is set to go up around Stage Center as the date of demolition nears for the architectural icon. The permit came through today on city’s web site from Universal Fencing to put up the fence. We do not have any word yet on when demolition will actually take place. But considering that the John W. Rex Elementary School, located immediately to the west, opens in late August, I suspect we’re looking at demolition taking place this next month. I know the operators of the school would prefer Stage Center to be gone before students arrive (thus eliminating the problem of vagrants with addiction and mental health issues camping out in the theater’s many nooks and corners).
UPDATE: I am informed by City Hall that Rainey Williams’ contractors can pull the demolition permit at any time, and immediately proceed with demolition as long as all the paperwork is in place. I will add that his representatives at Saxum Communications have previously assured me there will be no “midnight” demolition and that the community will be informed in advance when the demolition is to take place.
