CHICAGO (AP) — A winter storm moving across the Midwest has prompted watches and warnings across Illinois.

On Saturday the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for northwestern Illinois and flood warnings across southern Illinois. Winter weather and flood advisories were in effect for eastern Illinois and a freezing rain advisory in central Illinois. A flood watch was in effect for eastern Illinois.

Forecasters said melting snow coupled with up to 6 inches of rain in some areas of southern Illinois could lead to flooding. There were reports of water-covered roads and overflowing creeks and streams.

Snow in northern Illinois was forecast from 6-8 inches around Rockford, 2-4 inches in the northern Chicago suburbs and 1-2 inches in Chicago tapering to less than an inch in areas of central Illinois.
