Wisconsin governor: Saving Mercury Marine jobs could cost $70M

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Jim Doyle says dissuading outboard-engine maker Mercury Marine Inc. from moving its Fond du Lac operations to Oklahoma could cost state taxpayers $70 million.

That's in addition to a $50 million loan funded by Fond du Lac County sales tax and $3 million from the City of Fond du Lac.

In return, the outboard-engine maker is expected to retain several thousand jobs in the Fox Valley.

Last summer, Wisconsin and Oklahoma were engaged in a bidding war for Mercury's factories. Last-minute union concessions and proposed government aid persuaded the company to remain in Fond du Lac.

Doyle says the $70 million in state assistance comes mostly in the form of refundable tax credits. He says the company won't get the full amount if it does not retain 2,700 jobs.

Albert, you must have your radio stuck on AM mode. The money we have put into all those things you mentioned have returned 10 fold in income for Bricktown retailers. The canal has operated for a profit each year since it opened. It was supposed to loose money the first two years. I'll give you Bass Pro because it lacks a restaurant and fell victim to the owners association. So the 100 million you mention went to build a complex that processes a minimum of 50,000 people each weekend and 100,000 on a maximum event impacted weekend counting Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
I highly suggest you leave Bethany where it shuts down at 5PM and drive to Bricktown where it just gets started at 5PM. No, its not perfect but it works.
As for calling people idiots for making comments, well, welcome to the U.S.A. Maybe you would feel better in Iran where such comments would not be allowed. You can defect you know. I looked up the information to help you find it in NYC.

WOW, it's funny that you retards act as if Wisconsin is getting the shaft when we don't mind forkin over the same kinda tax dollars. Heck wasn't it over 100 million that OKC got from the tax payers for an entertainment option called the NBA. Then there is the bricktown canal, Bass Pro building, rebuilding schools, the countless companies Oklahoma tax payers subsidize. What idiots to come on here and make these comments.

$26,000 per employee to save their jobs. Maybe in their cost/benefit analysis they realized that 2700 employees would join the unemployment rolls for at least a year and cost every bit if not more. I know that unemployment has been extended to the longest term since its inception. Time was when an Oklahoma County resident had like 15 weeks total. Now I have no idea how long it now lasts but my lady neighbor has been on it since February of this year and is still going strong.

With our budget crisis, it's nice to be able to share some of the pain with the state of Wisconsin. Who says karma doesn't happen?
