Rain and freezing rain are in Oklahoma’s forecast through midweek, but ice accumulation will depend on how cold it is and for how long the rain falls, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

Roadways throughout the state and in the Oklahoma City metro area, especially on bridges and overpasses, could be slick and dangerous as early as this morning, meteorologist Chris Sohl said.

And although the metro area is northwest of the "sweet spot,” where Sohl said conditions for ice accumulation will be ripe, up to a quarter-inch of ice is possible throughout the state.

In some areas where it may be coldest, precipitation is less likely, and in areas of Oklahoma where the most rain is forecast, temperatures may hover above freezing, Sohl said.

"It’s a fine line, especially on power lines, which are small enough that a change of couple of degrees for a few minutes could lead to ice accumulation,” Sohl said. "But the area that is probably most at risk for it ... is south and east of the metro.”

Cold temperatures will remain through Wednesday, and Gulf moisture arriving this morning will bring the rain, Sohl said.
