Unique salsas a winning hand
Twenty years ago, Susan Witt made salsa from her own recipe and brought it to a party. She was bombarded with requests to package, market and sell the salsa — but it just wasn’t the right time for her, she said.
Witt continued making batches of salsa over the years, but finally decided 2012 was the year her unique recipe would be the basis for her new company, Unique Foods.
She attended a basic training workshop at Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agriculture Products Center in February and with their help, started developing “Ace in the Bowl” salsas.
Her original formula is mild, but she added a medium and hot version for those who like it spicy.
“It just has a real unique flavor. Anybody who tastes it just immediately likes it,” Witt said.
Six stores began carrying the first run of her product and she plans to make a second batch to fill additional orders later this month.
After the holidays, Witt, who owns a dry cleaner with her husband, wants to expand her business beyond Oklahoma and use the income to supplement their retirement.
Witt says anyone with a dream of starting their own food-based business would benefit from the OSU entrepreneurial workshop, which is held about every two months on the Stillwater campus.
