Women's basketball: No. 1 Baylor, Brittney Griner too much for Sooners
Oklahoma rallied in the first half with Brittney Griner on the bench, but when she returned in the second half the game became a rout.
NORMAN — Oklahoma guard Sharane Campbell was blunt about her team’s sluggish start Monday — and about Baylor superstar Brittney Griner’s role in it.

“We tried to stick to our game plan, but Brittney got a couple catches,” Campbell said. “I think that’s the difference. “She caught the ball and shot it. You can’t do much when the ball is in her hands.”
Griner, Baylor’s 6-foot-8 senior center, scored 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked seven shots and added five assists to lead No. 1-ranked Baylor in an 86-64 rout of Oklahoma inside Lloyd Noble Center.
Baylor held a comfortable 21-6 eight minutes into the game, when Griner had already racked up six points, six boards and two blocks.
Around that point, officials charged Griner with her second foul, causing Baylor coach Kim Mulkey to yank her from the game.
With the two-time All-American center relegated to the bench for the final 12 minutes of the first half, Oklahoma (19-9 overall, 9-7 Big 12) outscored Baylor 24-16 and trailed by seven at the break.
The Sooners had actually narrowed the deficit to four at one point late in the first half, but committed three straight turnovers that created a 6-0 Baylor run.
“We had some really good looks; obviously you have to capitalize on that,” said Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale. “But I think we got a lot out of that time. We had it at four, and three chances to cut it to two, and just weren’t able to connect on really good looks.
“You go in at halftime down seven, and you’re still in a really good spot.”
Baylor (27-1, 16-0 Big 12) emerged from halftime — with Griner — and began the second half on a 10-0 scoring run, during which the center blocked a shot, scored five points and hauled in three rebounds.
