Wondolowski, Gordon lead Earthquakes over Chivas

CARSON, California (AP) — Chris Wondolowski kicked a penalty in the first half and Alan Gordon added a goal in the second to lead the San Jose Earthquakes over Chivas USA 2-0 on Saturday in Major League Soccer.

With the win, San Jose extended its Western Conference lead over Seattle to eight points, while Chivas joins Portland at the bottom of the conference.

San Jose opened the scoring after a delayed penalty ruling. Gordon lay on the ground inside the penalty area for several moments while his teammates continued the attack. After play was stopped in the 19th minute, San Jose was awarded a penalty and Wondolowski converted.

Gordon scored in the 49th off a pass from Wondolowski.

In other matches, the Seattle Sounders drew 1-1 at the Portland Timbers, the Chicago Fire downed the Montreal Impact 3-1, The New York Red Bulls beat the Columbus Crew 3-1, D.C. United defeated the New England Revolution 2-1, FC Dallas held the Vancouver Whitecaps to 1-0, and the Philadelphia Union held Toronto FC to a 1-1 draw.

Rodney Wallace headed in a corner kick in the 78th minute to give Portland the home win and stall Seattle's playoff push.

Freddy Montero scored in the 56th minute for the Sounders, whose unbeaten streak reached five games.

Alex and midfielder Alvaro Fernandez each scored in the second half to lead the Chicago to a comeback win over Montreal.
