Comic-Con International in San Diego is going on this week, and one Oklahoman is celebrating his comic-book success with a new hardcover release. More than 125,000 fans descend annually on the convention, which kicked off Wednesday night in the San Diego Convention Center.
Yukon writer Brian Winkeler is on hand with his “Knuckleheads” hardcover collection from IDW Publishing. Artist Robert Wilson IV, a former Oklahoman, will be on hand with Winkeler for signing events and a panel.
Comic-Con played a key role in getting “Knuckleheads” a nationwide release, Winkeler said in an interview with The Oklahoman.
“It’s the magic of San Diego Comic-Con,” Winkeler said. “While there in 2012, I ran into Chris Roberson and Allison Baker, who’d just launched the digital-first publisher MonkeyBrain Comics. We hadn’t had any movement with ‘Knuckleheads’ since our self-published issue in 2010, and they asked if we’d be interested in relaunching it as a digital comic, so we jumped at the chance.”
After the digital release found success, Comic-Con was also the site that firmed up the print plans for the collection, Winkeler said.
“Last year at Comic-Con, I met with some folks from IDW Publishing, and they said they were interested in publishing a print collection,” Winkeler said. “Now, a year later, the book is out and ready for people to discover it.”
A third person with Oklahoma ties is on the creative team; Norman’s Jordan Boyd is the colorist. Letterer Thomas Mauer hails from Germany.
