Equipment needed for the construction of a $1.48 million bridge on Bryant Avenue is expected to arrive on site next week.

Construction under the roadway just north of 15th Street is expected to take about six months, City Engineer Steve Manek said, with work set to begin the week of Sept. 17.

One lane of traffic each way will be open throughout the construction.

“It will be congested and people are asked to use alternate routes, if possible,” Manek said.

Flooding in the area has been a problem since 1996, when voters passed a sales tax to pay for a new bridge and other capital improvement projects.

“The current drainage structure is not large enough, and during heavy rain, Bryant Avenue can flood and become impassable,” Manek said.

Edmond is paying for 100 percent of the project, which is one of the last projects expected to be funded with the 1996 sales tax money.

The Bryant bridge project has taken a while to get started because other projects had to be completed first, Manek said.

“Three or four years ago, we widened Coltrane,” Manek said. “We had to do the work down stream first.”

City officials have been working on the design of the Bryant bridge project and acquiring three or four easements.

“It is going to be difficult through the construction,” Manek said. “It will be better when it is done.”
