NORMAN — The first Embassy Suites and convention center in Norman is set to open in late October, officials said.
Recent rains caused some construction delays but the project is back on track, general manager Jim Rickards said. An executive team managing reservations, marketing and planning for food and beverage services is now working on site at 2501 Conference Drive, Rickards said.Scope of project
The 10-story hotel and conference center is being built in the University North Park Addition on the east side of Interstate 35 between Robinson Street and Tecumseh Road.
When complete, the hotel and conference center will be the fifth Embassy Suites in Oklahoma developed and owned by Missouri hotelier John Q. Hammons. Three others are in Oklahoma City and one is in Tulsa.
The hotel/conference center will feature 283 suites and meeting space to accommodate groups up to 2,900 people or more, Rickards said.
The executive team now working toward an October opening date includes:
•Paul Contomanolis, assistant general manager for food and beverage. Contomanolis has 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, beginning his career with a family-owned restaurant on Long Island, N.Y., and working 15 years with the Marriott corporation.
•Robert Henley, assistant general manager of rooms. Henley worked for the Embassy Suites on the River in Des Moines, Iowa, before coming to Norman. He has 18 years of experience in the hospitality industry.
•Marci Jacobs, director of sales and marketing. Jacobs helped open the Renaissance Oklahoma City Hotel and Convention Center in 1999. She has 16 years of experience in the industry.
•Cheryl McKay, director of catering. McKay served as director of catering at the Millennium Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., before coming to Norman. She has worked in the industry for 14 years.
