A Midwest City man hired to watch over abused and neglected children is accused of inappropriately touching three girls in the custody of the Department of Human Services.

Eszra Deon Walker, 29, was charged Monday in Oklahoma County District Court with one count of sexual battery and two counts of indecent or lewd acts with a child under 16, court records show.

He is accused of fondling the girls, ages 16, 15 and 13, last month, according to court papers.

Walker is a direct care specialist at the Pauline Mayer juvenile shelter in Oklahoma City, which houses victims of abuse, abandonment and sexual exploitation.

He has been suspended since Oklahoma County sheriff's officials began investigating the allegations, DHS spokeswoman Sheree Powell said Monday.

“We obviously do not tolerate any type of criminal activity by the people who are entrusted with the care of children,” Powell said.

Walker, a probationary employee who has worked at the shelter less than six months, passed a criminal-background check and drug test, submitted three work references and had lived in the state for five years before he was hired, Powell said.

“Sadly, all of the safeguards we have in place are not fail-proof predictors of human behavior,” she said.

Walker is in the Oklahoma County jail with bail set at $35,000, a jail official said.
