TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — A miner has been killed in an accident at an Alabama coal mine, authorities said.

The death happened Thursday evening at Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 7 in the Brookwood area of Tuscaloosa County, WBRC-TV reported.

The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. and involved one miner, Dennis Hall, a spokesman for Jim Walter Resources, told The Tuscaloosa News.

The 36-year-old man fell from a walkway onto equipment, which was in operation, police told The Birmingham News.

Jim Walter Resources, which is owned by Hoover-based Walter Energy, operates some of the country's deepest underground coal mines.

State and federal mine safety officials have been notified and will be conducting an investigation along with company and United Mine Workers' safety investigators to determine what happened, Hall said.

The victim's name wasn't released.

Hall said the company would likely release more information later Friday.
