EDMOND — Teachers at Edmond’s Boulevard Academy are hoping a project in community service will translate into a larger lesson about self-esteem for their students.
This week, the school’s students followed Red Ribbon Week activities by planting 600 tulips and daffodils on the campus.
"We tried to teach them that by beautifying Boulevard, you’re beautifying yourself,” said
Jennifer Wilkinson, the school’s counselor.
More than 125 students worked in small groups Friday and Monday to get the flowers in the ground. A fraternity from
University of Oklahoma also helped the students and chatted with them about college in the hopes of piquing their interest in continuing their education after high school.
Red Ribbon Week’s focus is drug prevention and education. Schools throughout the nation plan activities to create awareness among students.
Wilkinson said the students at Boulevard Academy performed a number of other service activities last week to commemorate the campaign. They worked with Rock the Walk, a walk sponsored by the Parents Helping Parents organization aimed at increasing awareness about teenage drug use.
School officials also used the Red Ribbon Week celebrations to kick off a nine-week program aimed at reducing teen domestic violence.
The school has partnered with the
YWCA to teach the school’s students how to prevent domestic violence at home and while on dates.
