EDMOND — Council members will discuss in a workshop Tuesday potential sites for a new $25.5 million public safety center and second building to be used for evidence storage and a crime laboratory.
The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. at 20 S Littler Ave.
Edmond voters on Oct. 11 approved a half-cent sales tax increase for five years. The additional sales tax went into effect April 1.
City leaders promised the public safety center, to house police headquarters, the 911 communications center and emergency management operations, would be built on city-owned land in the downtown area.
A city building is expected to be demolished to make room for the new center. Mayor Charles Lamb has suggested using land where the city's administration building now stands at 100 E First St. and the parking lot to the east. This would be large enough for the new center, which is estimated to span about 75,000 square feet.
The second building is expected to be built on city-owned land at another location, but not on park land.
The architects are expected to suggest locations to the council members. Frankfurt Short Bruza architects have been hired for $2,065,821 to design the public safety center.
Architects spent two days this month meeting with city officials discussing possible locations and steps that need to be taken to get the project started.
On Tuesday, council members also will discuss a timeline and design steps for the project. The design work is expected to take nine months, and the construction could take 18 months to two years.
