World Cup: How the United States can advance to the Round of 16 Published: June 23, 2014

The United States' draw with Portugal means they're not yet mathematically into the knockout stages. Here's how they can make it there.

*A win or a tie against Germany on Thursday and the U.S. is in. Simple as that.

*If Ghana and Portugal tie, the U.S. and Germany advance.

*The U.S. is currently tied with Germany in Group G on points, but the Germans have the advantage on goal differential, having scored two more goals and conceded one fewer than the U.S. for a +3.

*If Germany wins the group, they'll play the second-place team from Group H (Belgium, Algeria, Russia, South Korea). If the U.S. comes in second to Germany, it will play the Group H winner (likely Belgium) in the Round of 16.

*Even if the U.S. loses Thursday, there are still numerous scenarios which could see them through to the Round of 16. But a loss would put the U.S.'s fate in the hands of the Ghana-Portugal result.

*To avoid any trickery of foul play, both Group G games will be played at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
