With the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Team USA's Amanda Chidester swung at Brazil pitcher Camila Silva's offering and smacked a grand slam. Her homer allowed the U.S. to secure a 9-0 victory versus Brazil in five innings.
The U.S. will face Australia (4-1) for the 2012 World Cup of Softball title. Chidester was hitless as a member of the squad before her grand slam.
“Chiddy came up with a big bang-bang,” U.S. coach Ken Eriksen said.
Chidester was handed her grand slam ball and the U.S. lineup card after the game at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. She took a few moments to let her accomplishment sink in and read what was written on the ball aloud.
“It says, ‘First career USA hit',” Chidester said. “Awesome.”
Chidester did not start the game for Team USA (5-0), instead coming in as a pinch hitter for Valerie Arioto in the bottom of the second inning.
Arioto leads the tournament with seven RBIs. But Chidester did not think much about having been hitless or for whom she was pinch-hitting.
“You just gotta have fun and don't put too much pressure on yourself,” Chidester said. “It's a great experience. You're playing for USA.”
Team USA's Jenae Leles hit 1-for-2, scored a run and contributed two RBIs. She knew about Chidester's power at the plate.
