World Cup of Softball: U.S. wins 2012 World Cup championship

Fischer hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning Monday night to lead Team USA to a 3-0 victory against Australia to secure the 2012 World Cup championship. It's the Americans' sixth World Cup title.

“I was just looking for my pitch,” said Fischer. “I went in the hole 0-2, but I just stayed within myself and found a pitch I could drive and, fortunately, it went over her head.”

Fischer didn't know Eriksen said she was underrated. But Fischer said that was possible because she played college ball at Loyola Marymount.

“I think that's because I went to a small school, small conference, didn't really play in the big leagues, basically,” Fischer said. “I think that's reasonable. I just have to come out here and compete every day.”

She was 2 for 3 with two doubles in the title game. Eriksen was proud of how she competed in the tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

“Fish is good,” he said. “I'm not gonna make any bones about it. I was glad she got the opportunity and took advantage of it tonight.”

Michelle Moultrie scored the third run with a single and three-base error, allowing her to use her speed to give the U.S. breathing room. Moultrie said she didn't know if she could score on the error until rounding second base.
