World Cup Q&A: Oklahoma City Energy FC midfielder Michael Thomas

by Chris Brannick Published: June 11, 2014

Oklahoma City Energy FC midfielder and team captain Michael Thomas talked to The Oklahoman about the World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team and who he thinks will win it all.

Q: Do you think U.S.A. can get a win in group play?

A: I do. I’m a little biased because one of my best friends (Matt Besler) plays for the team and I get to talk to him a lot and I want him to do well. And I’m an optimistic guy. I think they’re going to get out of the group. I’m optimistic about it. I’m going for it. Put that on record.

Since you know Besler and Graham Zusi from Sporting Kansas City, what does it mean for those guys to be playing in the World Cup?

I mean, I talk to Bes almost every week and he’s just so excited. It’s kind of one of those where it hasn’t hit him, it’s just another soccer game. But at the same time he’s one of the best center backs in the nation. He gets to go on the world stage and prove it against the best players playing their top game at the time. I know Zus is the same way.

Who do you think is going to win?

If I had to pick, I’m going to say Argentina. I think they’re going to do it. I want (Lionel) Messi to shine. It’s in South America and it’s going to be their time. I like Brazil too, but Argentina is going to win.
