Police released a video Wednesday of a man who attempted to steal valuables from a south Oklahoma City gold buyer by climbing through the ceiling tiles.
A man and a woman walked into Oklahoma Gold Buyers, 9104 S Pennsylvania Ave., about 1:25 p.m. May 4 to sell sterling silver spoons, according to the police report.
The man asked the manager, Sam Limbocker, if he could use the restroom. Limbocker said he heard a noise coming from the safe room and went to investigate. When he opened the door, he found the man hanging from the ceiling tiles.
“It was totally bizarre. We have talked it over here at the store a million times, and we have no idea what they were thinking,” Limbocker said. “That is the first time anything like that has ever happened.”
He said the man may have planned to camp out above the ceiling until the store closed but was too intoxicated to stay up there.
“He was scared out of his wits. I'm just glad he wasn't armed,” Limbocker said. “Either way, they weren't going to get anything. We lock everything up, and we are armed. Even if he was going to camp up there, we have motion sensors that if he came down after close, an alarm would go off.”
Limbocker said the man fled the store after he was caught. He left the woman behind.
“He made a total mess of things, not just breaking all the ceiling tiles. He had soiled his pants, and it was everywhere,” Limbocker said.
While Limbocker was calling the police, the woman took the sterling silver spoons, told him she was sorry and walked out of the store.
The pair never had been in the store before, he said.
The man drove away in a blue sport utility vehicle. He was described as white, in his late 20s, about 5 feet, 7 inches, about 150 pounds, with short brown hair and bad teeth. The woman was described as white, about 5 feet 7 inches, about 150 pounds with long brown hair.
“I just hope that they get them off the street before something like this escalates and they hurt somebody,” Limbocker said.
