A city-owned building on the southeast corner of Gray Street and Peters Avenue is being demolished this week so a downtown parking lot can be expanded.

Midwest Wrecking Co. is expected to complete the demolition by Saturday. Until then, Peters Avenue between Gray and the alley north of Main and one westbound lane of Gray is closed to traffic.

The parking lot on Gray Street will be expanded to include 43 additional parking spaces, bringing the total to 147, city officials said. Expansion of the lot and installation of new, modern parking meters is expected to be finished by November.
