NEW YORK (AP) — Vinny Nittoli pitched eight solid innings, and Mitch Elliott and Joe Forney each drove in three runs as Xavier topped St. John's 8-2 in an elimination game Friday in the Big East tournament.

Nittoli (6-3) allowed two runs — one earned — and scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked three for the Musketeers (27-27), who will play the loser of Saturday's Creighton-Seton Hall matchup at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

Leading 2-0, Xavier broke it open in the third inning with four runs, capped by Elliott's three-run double. Forney, who had four hits, added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

Ryan McCormick (7-2) took the loss for the Red Storm (35-20), allowing four runs and seven hits in 2 1-3 innings.
