You’re welcome: Vote shows detainees have U.S. spot to land

We don’t know where on U.S. soil the Obama administration plans to send Guantanamo detainees slated for criminal trials, but there are 224 candidate congressional districts after a vote last week in the House of Representatives.

That’s how many House members voted against a bid to block the transfer of detainees to the United States. All five members of Oklahoma’s delegation supported a ban on bringing Guantanamo inmates here.

Obviously, there are plenty of representatives who think bringing detainees to the U.S. is acceptable — even though the perfect facility for holding and prosecuting them already exists at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The early leaders for receiving Gitmo detainees are the districts of Reps. Dan Maffei, D-N.Y., and Baron Hill, D-Ind. Both were quoted by The Associated Press as saying that bringing the likes of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to their backyards is no biggie.

"It’s a non-issue, inside the Beltway stuff,” Maffei told AP. "People care about jobs, the economy, health care.” Hill said no one has asked him about Guantanamo, and he doesn’t fear his vote as a campaign issue.

Splendid! The rest of America thanks Maffei and Hill for stepping up to the plate. Though public opinion has shown Americans oppose bringing detainees to their states by about 4-1, it’s possible folks think differently in the places Maffei and Hill call home.

These men should hold some town hall meetings first, to make sure they’re in tune with their constituents. Could be the best show since this summer’s town halls on health care.

With their only stance of personal ridicule in this debate, my military service or lack thereof not withstanding, even though not pertinent to the converstation at hand, of which has no relevance to the truth of the matter, let it be known because of their lack of substance, Stink and the others have relinquished the fact that I'm correct with the summary that enemy combatants don't qualify for constitutional rights.

I don't know what party, broker Malcolm Berko is. He sure blamed them and still does if you read his column in the Sunday paper each week.
I don't give Bush credit for anything except getting Obama elected.
Of course McCain didn't help himself when he chose a comedian for his running mate.

I remember the inauguration crowd, but the thing I remember about them is the fact that the Mall in Washington was left in the worst condition in history. The filth and trash was so indicative of the crowd that was there, that they will be remembered for what they were and are for a long time to come. Someone tell me why this country has to accept or endure the trash heaps left by such slime.

David, I agree that Oklahoma's congressional delegation are too worried about what will happen to come to Norman for a town hall. It's one of the few places in the state where precincts were actually won by President Obama. I would have loved to attend a town hall that wasn't already stacked with scared senior citizens & fans of Mark Shannon. I would have wanted to puke if I'd been in the audience when Sen. Coburn told that citizen that she should get her neighbors to help her care for her brain-injured husband!

And about those rights: We don't grant them. They are born to us. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

"Unalienable" means without border, not dependent on a country. We don't grant them the rights, they have them already.
