Police here are seeking assault and battery charges against two sisters caught on video beating a cheerleader last week inside Yukon High School.

Yukon Police Chief John Corn said the girls will not be arrested because they are juveniles and their case will proceed through the municipal court system.

The girls, whose names have not been released, have been suspended from school for three days.

Yukon Public Schools Superintendent Bill Denton said the girls were disciplined Friday, the day of the fight.

Denton said none of the girls involved have ever filed any kind of bullying complaint with Yukon administrators.

School officials said they spent the majority of the day Thursday speaking with concerned parents and media outlets after a local TV station report hinted that students at Yukon schools aren't allowed to fight back if they are attacked by others.

“That's just not the case,” Denton said. “It depends on a case-by-case basis, as to what actually transpired leading up to the actual altercation. A lot of factors go into it.”

Corn said the girl who was attacked would not have faced criminal charges had she fought back, based on the video footage he's reviewed.

“Under those circumstances, that would have been self-defense,” the chief said.
