YUKON — Construction will begin in early January on a highway improvement project in Yukon, a state Transportation Department official said.

The Transportation Department approved a $13 million contract bid from Edmond-based Duit Construction Co. to complete the project.

The project involves widening State Highway 4 from two to four lanes from Interstate 40 to State Highway 66.

Traffic lights and signs also will be updated during the project, Transportation Department spokesman Cole Hackett said. This is intended "to alleviate some of the traffic in the area and make (the roadway) flow better.”

The project is expected to be complete in late winter or early spring 2010. Hackett said the highway will probably remain open to traffic during the construction.
