Many Hispanic students are targets of bullying
Many Hispanic students are targets of bullying in state

Mayra Sigala lives in a two-bedroom mobile home on a remote road behind Frontier City. The door to her room is wrapped in red and pink Valentines Day paper. Cupids and hearts encase her name. At times, she seems amazingly mature for her age. At others, she seems more insecure than most 15-year-olds.

"We try to ignore it as much as we can, but it just gets worse and worse,” Mayra said about the racist slurs yelled at her in the crowded hallways of Edmond Memorial High School.

The first incident occurred in early November, within a week of the passage of House Bill 1804, Oklahoma's stringent immigration enforcement statute. A fellow student, a football player, yelled at her in the hallway.

"He kept calling me names,” she said. "He kept telling me to go back to Mexico. I tried to tell him that I was born here, but he didn't believe me.”

Other students laughed.

"I guess they all agreed with him,” she said. Mayra did not tell the principal. She feared he would not believe her. Instead, she told her Spanish teacher. A few other Hispanic students were experiencing the same thing, she said. They were told by the teacher that something would be done. But the behavior continued, Mayra said. School officials say the information was not passed on. They say if they had known, something would have been done. But they conceded there have been issues in the past.

"It's obvious there were some issues we needed to address, otherwise we wouldn't have started native speaker's class,” said Brenda Lyons, associate superintendent with the Edmond School District. "Do we have bullying? Of course we do ... There's not any more than the norm with any other group.”

The native speaker's class started a few years back at Edmond Memorial. It's a class that blends learning the mechanics of the Spanish language with providing social support to Spanish-speakers.

Bullying at other schools
The problem isn't specific to Edmond Memorial High School. Community leaders say this school year has been noticeably difficult for many first-generation students. Many students have to translate and navigate cultural complexities for their parents; the language barrier means their parents are unable to advocate for them at school. Rey Madrid, youth organizer for the League of United Latin American Citizens, says Hispanic youth are reporting these things across the metro area. It's something all the children of the youth council speak freely about when they meet. The head of the youth council told him she has been targeted because of her race at Westmoore High School.

"These children are getting bullied and they are getting angry,” he said. Madrid warned that for some kids bullying pushes them to drop out, join gangs or use drugs.

"Whenever kids at school pick on somebody, that child that gets picked on is going to look for security,” he said. "Kids don't always know how to work things out for themselves, and they turn to gangs for security. They turn to drugs to ease the pain.”

‘Supposed to be here'
Mayra Sigala was born in Oklahoma. Her parents were granted amnesty in 1986, as part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act signed by President Reagan.

The act made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit undocumented immigrants, required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status, and granted amnesty to undocumented immigrants who entered the United States before 1982 and had resided there continuously.

I really think this liberal paper has this backwards, most people I hear from tell me that the latinos, make crude remarks and give learing looks at the young girls and and itomadate the the Americans, are your eyes so closed that you dont know about the M13 and the mexican mafia, wake up the intimation is on the American and legal children, tell em what si going on in this country when business and newspapers go so far against what is good for American citizens

The article says bad things about Oklahoma. Those things appear to be based on the truth. However, when I read the comments below the story, I am sickened. Would I want to invest in Oklahoma with the kind of screwed up people who spew hatred against others? Would I want to spend my vacation in Oklahoma? Would I want to come to one of the Indian Casinos in Oklahoma? Would I want to raise my family in Oklahoma? I guess our creator endowed all of us with a right to be irrelevant and mediocre. Why as Oklahomans do we fight so hard to actualize it.

Devona Walker "diversity reporter" and uber pc propagandist is at it again with her biased nonsense.Poor little hispanics joining gangs because of the evil white people. She only presents one side in her articles and it is almost always pro-minority.Devona is a shill for multiculturalism. Why doesn't this "reporter" examine what happens to whites at Capitol Hill high school?

Do the sob stories ever stop? Do places like NEWSOK ever post about the bullying, racism, and atrocities perpetuated by Hispanics? Do socialist bleeding heart EVER consider anything without being emotive? What a bunch of BS. Wonder how aliens are treated in Hispanic countries? Oh that right we don't want to look at that do we?

Just a note, nice side article on the related search section on unemployment. Funny how the UNOklahoman is not in front of this story, rather newsbusters. The UNOklahoman probably just won't report on the unemployment drop, I wonder why? It's good news isn't it? Maybe reporting news as that doesn't fit agenda reporting, maybe.

Chris, David, Lynn, Kurt, Deborah and all you other bleeding hearts. NEWS FLASH: White middle class kids get bullied just as much as anyone else and in some cases even more. No one said bullying was acceptable and yes it reminds me of something, but not how Japanese kids or black kids were treated decades ago. It reminds me of how my own children were treated not that long ago because they were brought up to be devout Christians. They had things stolen from them at knife point, my daughters were threatened with rape, and my son was beat up several times on the way home from school. We reported it to the school just like Helen's family did and we were told that the teachers couldn't do anything unless they saw it happen. So he was told to report it to a teacher if they came after him again. When he did, the teacher called him a "whimp". So, I finally gave my son permission to defend himself and of course a teacher saw that happen so he was suspended for three days. It didn't matter to the bully because he'd been suspended before for the same thing and a year later got kicked out of school for pulling a knife on the same teacher that called my son a whimp. That was when I pulled my kids out of public school. Bullying has been going on for decades. It's NOT just Hispanics that get bullied.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But the reason this story isn't about black kids in white schools or white kids in black schools or Christian kids, or fat kids or mentally retarded kids, or poor kids, who have been and are still bullied in public schools is because the Oklahoman doesn't have an agenda that leans in their favor. The Oklahoman is owned and operated by liberal Democrats who want nothing more than to sell the citizens of this state on embracing and taking pity on people that have illegally invaded this state. The author of this article wants every citizen to feel guilty that HISPANIC kids are getting bullied, not all kids, just HISPANIC kids. The Oklahoman wants HB 1804 thrown out and its editors know that the ONLY way to accomplish that is to get the public to feel sorry for Hispanics. Wake up you easily manipulated drones!
T. A., Moore - Apr 22, 2008 at 5:09 pm
ana marie, no one is condoning bullying on here. the question is not whether bullying is right or wrong. we know it's wrong, the question is why is one student's being bullied a story. would this be a story if it didn't have the tie to 1804?
Renee, edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 4:05 pm
No Renee you and rufus are the nuts. thanks
Ana Maria, Yukon - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Oh please my son attend Capitol Hill and gets bullied all the time by the exact people who are in this article. Now you tell me this is allright when these illegals are taking over our schools and bullying the ones who are legal!I have tried compalining but unfortunatley the school is also ran by these same people. Try to call and a person answers the phone who can barley speak english.
melissa, oklahoma city - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:44 pm
wow ana. you are nuts. i'm just making a point that bullying has happened forever. it's a horrible thing, but there is a reason why we are NOW seeing a bullying story. oh, and it won't be news to my family that we had family members who were slaves. it's also not news to my children who are half black, half finnish. wanna bully them too ana?
Renee, edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Good point Just Rufus is a -------- idiot.
Ana Maria, Yukon - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:43 pm
sorry about the grammar in earlier post.. one last thought I forgot..Rufus..your a frigging idiot.
Just , Jones Transplant - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Our schools are fine Just, no need for a knee jerk reaction. The schools already punish bullies here in oklahoma, starting in kindergarden. This article was just a slam on HB 1804, it wasn't about bullying.
Rufus, spencer - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Tsk, Tsk Ana... If the illegals wouldn't have broken the law they wouldn't be in this little pickle, now would they? Everyone experiences racism, it's not exclusive to any particular race.
Rufus, spencer - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Good Lord People Wake up!!! Yeah I agree its a one sided story..that the OKLAHOMANS fault.. but the subject could have fatal consequenses.. Be it White, black, mexican, asian, green yellow or purple.. Bullying is an issue that can not be taken lightly or ignored. Yes kids will be kids BUT where do we draw the line at not just being kids anymore?? after Columbine?? An their are "less desirables" living everywhere.. if there is the opportunity some will go for it.. no matter where you live no matter what type of neighborhood your in.. Why is everyone so fast to lay down that race card????
Just , Jones Transplant - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:30 pm
No,but yours are and your families are to.Sounds like you have a problem.I hope somebody in your family gets bullied and tell them they were slaves!!!!!!!!!
Ana Maria, Yukon - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm
i remember being one of the only black kids in Norman public schools for a long time. I got called racial slurs numerous times, but it never made the paper.
Renee, edmond - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I wonder how many different angles pro-illegals are going to hit trying to turn 1804 into a race issue?
Rufus, spencer - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Packed your bags yet Ana?
Rufus, spencer - Apr 22, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Percy, nice research on that. By your definitions of the law, we could clean up society by bullying laws alone. I think we should enforce these laws also. As for schools, I personally have zero tolerance for anything besides learning. If students aren't there to learn, get them out, period I don't care what race they are. So, with Percy's definitions of the law and zero tolerance in schools, we could effectively clean up society, at least in Oklahoma.
