The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, was presented to five metro-area girls during a ceremony April 17.

The Gold Award signifies outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning or personal development. Recipients must fulfill various requirements and spend a minimum of 80 hours identifying and investigating an issue, building a team, creating a plan and taking action.

The recipients and their projects are:

• Kathryn Francis,
of Moore, hosted a one-mile walk and health fair to combat childhood obesity. The children received a sticker and healthy snack. They were given information about healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices, and were asked to pick fun exercise routines.

Emily Schwind,
of Oklahoma City, supplied Lake Thunderbird State Park with 24 birdhouses and four birdfeeders.
