Get App-y: ‘What are you feeling right now?'

Feeling stressed? Blah? Angry? Ready for a new outlook in 2011?

Whatever your mood, New York family therapist Ronit Herzfeld said a key to getting in a good one and staying there is to recognize how you're feeling. She said that once people embrace their feelings, they can start making choices to shift to a more positive outlook.

She's so passionate about helping people get in touch with their emotions that's she's created a mobile application, Awareness ($3.99, Discover Yourself), as a tool. Available on iTunes but with other versions in the works, the app prompts people a certain number of times a day to answer the question “What are you feeling right now?”

The questions help drill down exactly what you're feeling, why you have those feelings and what you're doing at the time. The app records these in a chart with colors marking each mood so you can track trends such as feeling depressed every time you pay bills, or overeating in response to certain moods. Quotes and meditation reminders also are included.
