Grandfield in southwestern Oklahoma sets state heat record
Grandfield gets its 87th day of triple-digit heat this year, breaking state record
GRANDFIELD - The Oklahoma Mesonet site at Grandfield reached triple-digits Monday for the 87th time in 2011, breaking the state record for number of days at or above 100 degrees in a calendar year, according to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey.
The previous record of 86 days was held by Hollis from the summer of 1956.
Grandfield is about 40 miles southwest of Lawton. Its first triple-digit reading this year was 101 degrees back on April 18.
Altus also added another 100-degree day on Monday for 85 days of triple-digit temperatures this year. And, Hollis has had 82 days at or above 100 degrees in 2011.
Grandfield's daily average summer temperature — the climatological summer runs from June 1 through August 31 — through Sunday has been 92 degrees, with an average high temperature of 106 degrees. Since October 1, 2010, Grandfield has had only 5.9 inches of rainfall, nearly 20 inches below normal.
“It's just another hot day, that's pretty much how most people see it,” Caleb Fourkiller, branch manager at Co-op Services in Grandfield said Monday. “Rain is what everyone's waiting on.”
