Montaleto McKissick, 37, who was fleeing from police investigating a fight at a nightclub, was taken to OU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Oklahoma City police Capt. Patrick Stewart said paramedics found a plastic baggy lodged in McKissick's throat with a foreign substance in it. Stewart did not say what the foreign substance was.
Officers were called to El Dorado night club, 2323 N Missouri Avenue, shortly after midnight Saturday about a fight. Stewart said security had two people in custody, and they pointed out McKissick in the crowd to police.
Stewart said McKissick then fled west on foot and then north on NE 23. Stewart said officers took McKissick into custody at 1824 E Madison after hitting him with a Taser.
Officers handcuffed McKissick after he fell to the ground, and they noticed he was in distress and not breathing. They called for paramedics and began performing CPR, Stewart said.
When the paramedics arrived, they found a plastic bag blocking McKissick's airway, Stewart said.
Sgt. Daniel Godsio and officer Justin Walters have been placed on administrative leave with pay, police said.
Godsio has been with the department for nine years, and Walters has been an officer for three years, Stewart said.
According to police department policy, the two will be interviewed in 48 hours about the incident.
