A Mustang man begged for mercy today but ultimately was sentenced to the maximum prison sentence for possessing child pornography.
A federal judge in Oklahoma City sentenced Joel Keith Newton to 10 years in prison for perpetuating the victimization of children by downloading and sharing child pornography.
Newton, 47, maintained he is not a threat to children, even though authorities found more than 18,000 images of child pornography when they searched his home in April 2007.
"I know what I did was wrong and I'm sorry," he said.
Defense attorney David Autry asked U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot to consider a lighter sentence, arguing Newton did not deserve such harsh punishment.
Autry said Newton is a non-violent offender who faced a harsher sentence than someone who victimized children, citing the case of a child pimp sentenced to 10 years only after the judge opted to impose a longer term than recommended by federal sentencing guidelines.
"It's clearly not fair," he said.
Prosecutors countered by citing studies that showed many men convicted of possessing child pornography later confessed to abusing at least one child.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Sengel said the severe punishment facing Newton was mandated by Congress in such cases.
