An off-duty Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a man suspected of trying to rob the trooper at his home Friday, Oklahoma City Police said.

Police said the trooper was in the garage with the garage door open at his home in the 200 block of NE 2 Street when the man pointed a gun at him and asked for his belongings.

The trooper led the man to the home's second floor where the trooper used his gun to shoot the man, police said.

The gunman later died from the wounds at a hospital.

“Whether you're in your home or not you have the right to protect yourself,” Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

Names of the gunman and the trooper were not released as the shooting is under investigation. Police said the gunman was a black man who appeared to be in his 20s.

The man may have been involved in a separate crime, an attempted kidnapping, Friday morning, police said.
