NORMAN — A lot of talk surrounding Oklahoma’s 2014 recruiting class has involved highly touted running back signee Joe Mixon, and rightfully so with the Oakley, Calif. (Freedom) native being the top rated all-purpose back in the country by Rivals.com.
But during Wednesday’s signing day press conference in Norman, the Sooners’ other running back signee, Samaje Perine, received equal praise from the coaching staff.
“Everybody’s going to be excited about the running backs,” said co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel. “They’re extremely special players. Samaje’s a big, strong, physical, impressive looking kid. When you see him walk in the door, he looks like a grown man.”
Head coach Bob Stoops, co-offensive coordinator Jay Norvell, and running backs coach Cale Gundy also raved about Perine’s (5-foot-11, 238 pounds) rare combination of size and ability.
“He’s very athletic guy for a big guy,” Gundy said. “He’s got great feet and he’s got great hands. He (bench presses) like 385 pounds and he squats over 500. Just ridiculous numbers right now.”
Stoops and Norvell both said they saw Perine during a recent visit he made to Norman and stated the Pflugerville, Texas (Hendrickson) product looks more like a junior in college than a high school senior.
