It was a close call, but OU came out as "Quarterback U" in ESPN.com's rankings of the best schools at specific positions in the 2000s.

With two Heisman winners and plenty of national awards, Oklahoma's quarterbacks from 2000-01 to 2013-14 scored a 142 to Southern Cal's 134 in ESPN's Position U rankings. The rankings awarded programs points based on college football award winners (10 points), consensus All-Americans (8), NFL first-round draft picks (8), coaches' first-team all-conference picks (6), NFL draft picks through rounds 2-4 (4), and draft picks through rounds 5-7 (4).

OU grading out better than USC came down to college football awards, says ESPN's David Ching:

"Other schools might have a better record of placing quarterbacks in the pros," said Ching. "But the Sooners have been one of the nation's most consistent programs in the 2000s thanks in part to solid quarterback play from the likes of (Jason) White, (Sam) Bradford, Josh Heupel and Landry Jones."

Rounding out ESPN's top five in the "Quarterback U" rankings were Texas (122 points), Florida State (102) and Florida (100). Oklahoma State tied with Pittsburgh and TCU with 16 points on the "Quarterback U" rankings.

In addition to quarterbacks, the Sooners ranked in the top 10 in the three other offense categories evaluated in ESPN's "Position U." OU was No. 2 in running backs, tied for seventh in wide receivers and fourth in offensive linemen.
