U.S. seeks to reassure Sunni ties

BAGHDADU.S. officials were contacting senior Sunni leaders to "reassure the Sunni community” that both the American and Iraqi governments have "every intent to live up to the promises” made to the Sunni groups, U.S. spokesman Maj. Gen. David Perkins said Monday.

AFGHANISTAN: Washington is planning a campaign against terrorist financing networks in Afghanistan, sending in dozens of federal drug enforcement agents to help stem the country’s opium trade, U.S. officials told The Associated Press.

A gunfight broke out in central Baghdad over the weekend after authorities arrested Adel al-Mashhadani, the local leader of a Sunni group that had broken with al-Qaida.

A major rift between the Shiite government and the Sunni groups could fuel sectarian tensions and threaten security as the U.S. begins withdrawing its forces this year.

The leader of Sunni paramilitaries in Diyala province threatened Monday to stop helping U.S. and Iraqi forces if the jailed leader were not freed.
