Republican Brian Maughan won the District 2 commissioner's race in Oklahoma County, while problems at the county jail didn't keep voters from supporting Sheriff John Whetsel, who easily won re-election Tuesday night.

Maughan beat Democrat Jim Dickinson, 54.9 percent to 45.1 percent.

Democrat Whetsel defeated his opponent, Republican Jim Hietmeyer, 62 percent to 38 percent.

Whetsel said voters understand the jail has been a problem regardless of who is sheriff because of its design flaws. He also said voters understand being sheriff is about more than the jail.

“I think the citizens voted on crime issues,” Whetsel said. “They know the sheriff has been very aggressive in keeping them safer.”

Maughan, who worked for former District 2 Commissioner Jack Cornett before he was defeated by Brent Rinehart in 2004, said he expects to have a better relationship with his fellow elected officials than Rinehart, who often clashed with fellow commissioners and members of the budget board.
